Characters with Courage American Heroes on Stage

From the Page to the Stage and Beyond is an award winning grant from the Chicago Foundation for Education awarded to Raymond Wohl, Fine Arts teacher at Thrugood Marshall Middle School.
Students will create a play with music based on the writings, words, and deeds of American heroes with Character!
Ceasar Chavez, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall and others.
The project will bein in early 2009 and continue through the Spring performances in May, 2009.
The fine arts drama projects will be produced in cooperation with the Beyond the Bell after-school program, funded by the CFE, and performed by students and teachers at Thurgood Marshall Middle School located at 3900 N. Lawndale St. Chicago, IL 60618.

Music Standards for students of Music

Merit Music Instrumental Band @ Irving Park Middle School provides twice weekly in-school band music classes


Instruments include: Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Saxophone, Trombone, Snare and Bass Drum

Official 8th grade Class Songs are selected by each graduating class in the Spring, rehearsed, memorized and performed in concert at the June graduation ceremony.

Music Standards

1 – Knowledge & Skills
I know the vocabulary and concepts of music – pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, timbre.
I can show the elements of music with my voice or on an instrument.
I can play music, alone and with others.
I have music skills – I can sing a melody in tune, keep a beat, make a rhythm, and sing some harmony.
I can read some musical notation.
I can listen to and identify musical concepts.
I know about some famous composers.
I know some different styles of music.
I’m a respectful audience member.

2 – Creative Process
I can compose.
I know the creative process – prepare, dare, repair, and share.
I can use the tools and forms of composition.
I know how to rehearse.
I can listen to and talk about music. I know how to perform – concentrate, use the stage, project for the audience, and respect the audience.

3 – Communicating
I can tell a story, create patterns, and express my ideas and feelings with music.
I can explain the purpose and meaning of my music.

4 – Making Connections
I can use and compare music with other art forms: dance, theatre, and visual art.
I can use music to express ideas from subjects like math, science, social studies, and reading.
I can talk about ways that music is important in culture and history.
I know about careers in music.
